TakingBerlin
asa blueprint.
After the Berlin Wall fell, abandoned buildings became the playgrounds for a generation of artists, makers, and clubs. Berlin became Berlin.
Downtown San Francisco has the same opening now: empty floors, a redefining industry, people ready to be the new frontier.
Building a community-centric digital infrastructure.
We built our first coliving house in Leipzig in 2013, just an hour south of Berlin. Called Ost-Apotheke, it became a community of 35 curious students, artists, and musicians. We curated and set guiding principles for the community while renovating the building in collaboration with all its members.
Every floor had a purpose. We built a techno club in the basement, a bar on the first floor, and a hostel on the second. All other floors were dedicated to living together. The community has lived in our building without our interference for the last 9 years.
Our curiosity drove us to build our own tech startups. We failed in some, while we exited others at seed and Series A. On this journey, our third co-founder, recently the CTO of two a16z startups, joined us. Meanwhile, our passion for a cypherpunk world grew alongside a steady interest in real estate investments.
This project combines all our strengths. Community building, permissionless and censorship-resistant tech, and real estate in a cypherpunk world.
“Combining all our strengths: community, cypherpunk tech, and real estate.”
The inter-city network society.
Governance by design
Our goal is to make ourselves obsolete. We will write a constitution governing all the ins and outs of the vertical village. Once citizens are ready, we will retrace ourselves and hand over decision-making to them. For our democracy to function, we want to build out our own Ethereum L2 for all citizens to interact, vote, and communicate.
SF is the proving ground
San Francisco is just the beginning. Success here will enable expansion nationwide and eventually worldwide. Our broader goal is to build a connected global society where thoughtfully curated communities move effortlessly between locations, always surrounded by driven, curious individuals at the forefront of innovation.
Full-stack citizenship
We aim to integrate essential services into our economic model. Health insurance, pension funds, quality healthcare, and long-term financial security for all citizens. Our plans extend into bold, sci-fi-inspired territory. Join us in person to explore how paradigm-changing this vision truly is.
